Response to AG Press Release of 3/15/02.
Warwick, RI March 15, 2002
Carl P. DeLuca, Esq., an attorney representing nearly 30 people who have
filed claims in RI Superior Court alleging that they were sexually
abused by priests from the Providence Diocese responds to the Press
Release from Attorney General Whitehouse of March 15, 2002:.
"While we are encouraged by the fact that the Attorney General is
investigating these matters, we would have been happier if he had
contacted us before issuing his press release. Had he done so, he would
have been able to cross reference the information he received from the
Diocese with the information we have. We might also have reminded him
that RIGL 9-17-23 pertains only to restricting testimony under oath, not
to unsworn disclosure to law enforcement, and it does not apply at all
to documents.
Moreover, it is all well and good to urge people to come forward, but
if they are prohibited from doing so by confidentiality agreements it is
unreasonable to expect them to do so unless the Diocese releases
everybody from those agreements as the Boston Diocese did.
We urge the Attorney General to join with us in demanding that the
Providence Diocese do so immediately."
