Carl P. DeLuca, Esq., an attorney representing nearly 30 people who have
filed claims in RI Superior Court alleging that they were sexually
abused by priests from the Providence Diocese responds to the assertions
of the Providence Diocese that they do not have the ability to
compensate the victims of sexual abuse, and that such a settlement
would inhibit their ability to do charity:.
"It is commendable that the Diocese wishes to be able to continue
supporting the charitable works it has traditionally supported.
However, the Providence Diocese must realize that charity begins at
home, particularly when the need that exists was created by their own
conduct. Cardinal Law is planning on liquidating real estate in order
to compensate the victims of sexual abuse. Once again we call upon the
Bishop of Providence to follow the lead of Cardinal Law. The Diocese of
Providence has many assets that they can liquidate, or pledge as
security for a loan, in order to compensate the victims of sexual abuse.
"Below is a partial list of real estate owned by the Roman Catholic
Bishop of Providence, none of which are church buildings, and at least
one of which was rented to a film company for a period of time. Another
of the listed properties is a luxurious beach house valued at more than
$1,000,000.00. Most of the rest of the real estate listed are just
empty lots."
