The solicitation may come by fax, mail or handout urging you to provide
personal information about yourself or your baby. The payoff is supposed to be a $500
savings bond or large cash payment by joining a class action lawsuit against the Gerber
baby food company.
However, there is no such class action suit and there will be no check in
the mail! The solicitations ask for copies of your child's birth certificate and social
security number. It is speculated that this information is intended to be used for
fraudulent purposes. The exact purposes are unknown, but this type of information may be
used to set up false identities in order to obtain credit cards and even pad voting rolls.
You should never give out this type of information unless you are sure of
whom you are giving it to and that the information is necessary.
UPDATE! - I have been contacted by a
reporter who has discovered that the post office box used was a box formerly rented by a
public relations firm who worked for another baby food company who actually had been sued
for false advertisement. He is currently investigating the purpose of the scam and he has
reported to me that the post office box has been closed and all mail to it is being
returned.
UPDATE! UPDATE! - For those of you who just refuse to believe that this is a scam, Gerber
has provided a personal message
for you.
